One of the toughest cell phones available: Designed and made by the construction company, CAT, the B100 is guaranteed to survive a fall from a height of 1.8m (6ft) to a concrete floor, without ever suffering a scratch.
The designers of the CAT B100 have definitely done their homework: This brick is IP67 certified dust, water, and drop proof. It is also MIL-STD-810G certified to resist salt, dust, humidity, rain, vibration, solar radiation, transport and thermal shock. And just to clarify, the shiny grey parts of the phone that you see in the picture are actually metal, not some cheap metal-colored plastic.
The keypad is ergonomically designed and the keys are sized so you can use them without having to take your gloves off. Perfect for cold weather, and for workers on construction sites where security wear is necessary. The keypad lights up when pressed, which is crucial when using the phone in the dark.
Built to survive the extremes, the B100 will function perfectly in temperatures as low as -25°C (-13°F) and as high as 55°C (131°F). Its dual noise canceling microphones allow for high call quality even in loud environments.
The English user manual is comprehensive, compact, and well written. You can download a full copy in 17 different languages here.
On a fun note, CAT stayed true to themselves making the ring tones and alerts all sound like heavy construction equipment: A truck door closing, diesel engines, the sound of a rusty hinge, and so on…
A feature that we haven’t found elsewhere is the option to automatically power the phone off and on, which is useful while you sleep. Unfortunately, there is a loud audible alarm asking you to confirm shutting the phone down, so be aware of that in case you doze off before the phone’s scheduled power down time.
A negative is the white text on yellow background when typing text messages, which is quite hard to read and apparently cannot be changed.
To summarize, this is an excellent phone for construction workers, outdoorsy folks, or anyone needing a phone that will withstand a rough environment. Call quality is loud and clear, and the battery will last for weeks in standby mode (or 10 hours talking non stop). If a highly resistant basic phone is what you’re looking for, the CAT B100 will be just right for you.
